North Eastern Regional Centre (NERC), Shillong, Meghalaya

The North Eastern Regional Centre, Shillong is the first Regional Centre of Zoological Survey of India and was established on 6th March, 1959 with the primary objective of exploring and documenting the myriad faunal diversity of Northeast India. Currently, the Centre has jurisdiction over six northeastern states namely, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Among the major achievements, the Centre has successfully completed 119 research projects that consisted of faunal inventory of protected areas, studies on unique ecosystems, status surveys and EIA studies. Since inception, the scientists of this Centre have described 75 species as new to science, besides reporting more than a 100 species of animals as new record to Indian fauna and new record to State fauna. The centre has published over 390 research papers (including books and book chapters) over the years in various national and international journals.

The North Eastern Regional Centre, Shillong is the first of the 16 Regional Centre of Zoological Survey of India and was established on 6th March, 1959 with the primary objective of exploring and documenting faunal diversity of northeastern India. The Centre’s jurisdiction extends to six North East Indian states of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Over the years, the Centre has completed  about 120 research projects covering faunal diversity of protected areas and ecosystems, status survey of animal groups, environmental impact assessment etc. The scientists of the Centre have so far described 75 new  species and reported  hundreds of new faunal species records  to India and states. Over 380  research papers in various national and international journals and book chapters were published by the scientists of the Centre. 

North Eastern Regional Centre covers six North Eastern States of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.

*Documentation of Faunal diversity of Nagaland (Lower vertebrates), Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, Baghmara Reserve Forest, Saipung Wildlife Sanctuary/Narpuh Reserve Forest of Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya.

*One hundred fifteen research projects covering various aspects of faunal diversity in the NE states completed

*Six Environmental Impact Assessment studies were conducted as follows

* Dhaleswari H.E. Project, Mizoram, Kopili H. E. project in N.C. Hills, Assam,     Myntdu-Leishka H.E.Project, Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, Kulsi Multipurpose H.E.     Project, Kamrup, Assam, Jadukata Multipurpose H. E. Project, West Khasi Hills,     Meghalaya, and Lower Subansiri H. E. Project, Dhemaji, Assam

*Seventy five new species were described as follows

                                 Protozoa 1 species                 Rotifera 4 species                   

                                 Arachnida 11 species              Dermaptera 3 species

                                 Orthoptera 1 species               Coleoptera 6 species

                                 Hymenoptera 5 species           Diptera 2 species

                                 Pisces 11 species                    Amphibia 29 species

                                 Mammal 2 species

*Besides, there were many new species records reported from India. 

The office cum laboratory building is equipped with some advanced facilities like compact insect storage system for safe and permanent storage of entomological collection and Leica 205A stereomicroscope with attached HD camera.

Over 115 research projects on various groups of animals covering taxonomy, biology, ecology, distribution, status, etc. were taken up by the Scientists of the Centre.

Taxonomic expertise are available on Zooplankton, Aquatic Hemiptera, Decapoda, Pisces, Amphibia, Reptilia and Mammalia (Chiroptera and Rodentia).

Museum

The Centre maintains a museum exhibiting the representative fauna of North East India and is open to general public and students of educational institutions. About 1000 specimens of 430 species of animals are on display in various exhibits.
