The Gangetic Plains Regional Centre was set up at Patna in March, 1965 under the third Five Year Plan to survey, ascertain and augment knowledge on the faunal resources of Gangetic Plains. The Centre’s covers two states of India namely Bihar and Jharkhand. The Centre has conducted nearly 165 extensive surveys and 475 intensive surveys and has explored more than 10 states and UTs, 22 Protected Areas, 4 Ecosystems, 4 EIA including one Gangetic Dolphin Management Plan. The Centre has also undertaken over 119 research projects (including EIA) covering various aspects of the faunal diversity of the Gangetic Plains. The scientists of this Centre have published over 500 research publications in the form of research articles, books and book chapters. More than 112 species new to science have been discovered by the scientists of the Centre since its inception.
