The Central Zone Regional Centre was established at Jabalpur on 24th February 1960 under Second Five Year Plan. The jurisdiction area of the Centre includes two states of Central India namely Madhya Pradesh (covering 54 districts having 11 National Parks, 24 Wildlife Sanctuaries, 6 Tiger Reserves and 3 Biosphere Reserves) and Chhattisgarh (covering 33 districts having 3 National Parks, 10 Wildlife Sanctuaries and 3 Tiger Reserves and 1 Biosphere Reserve). The National Zoological Collection of this Centre includes a total of 1,49,289 specimens. The Centre has successfully completed 42 research programmes involving faunal exploration in various protected and non-protected areas of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh along with studies on status survey, behaviour, taxonomic revisions/studies and State Fauna Series. As of now, the scientists and staff of the Centre has published 33 species new to science, 20 books (including state fauna series), and more than 385 research papers.
Zoological Museum
The museum of Central Zone Regional Centre has exhibits over 350 specimens of various fauna of India including crustaceans, arachnids, insects, molluscs, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The purpose of this museum is to generate public awareness towards biodiversity and its conservation.
