The Zoological survey of India, Western Regional Centre is one of the 16 regional centers of ZSI established in 1959 with the objectives of survey and documentation of the faunal diversity of the Western Region of the country, covering Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka and Goa state and especially the Western Ghats and Deccan regions of India.
Some of the major research undertaken by the Centre includes Fauna of Maharashtra State, Fauna of Goa, Fauna of Protected Areas as well as Tiger Reserves and important wetlands of Maharashtra.
Scientists of the Centre have discovered more than 100 species as new to science. The National Zoological collections maintained at the Centre is recorded with 2,01,737 specimens of both vertebrates and invertebrates including primary type materials. More than 1,00,000 specimens have been digitized belonging to five vertebrates and 24 invertebrate groups.
The WRC is housed with over 500 type materials, along with 150 DNA barcodes generated on different fauna including Rare, Endangered and Threatened species. Capacity building programmes on taxonomy, biodiversity and conservation has been regularly organized by the Centre for the benefit of researchers and student.
The Centre also assist the frontline staff of enforcement agencies towards identification and advisory services for curbing wildlife crime and trafficking.
WRC, Pune is recognised by University of Pune and Shivaji University, Kolhapur for pursuing PhD through this centre.
Museum
The museum has exhibits over 500 specimens of various regional fauna, including crustaceans, arachnids, insects, molluscs, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The purpose of this museum is to generate public awareness towards biodiversity and its conservation.

Library of Western Regional Centre comprises of more than 5000 books and 20000 general issues. The library houses one of the oldest collection of zoological records dating back to 1875. The library of the Centre also has many international monograph on various subjects. Library is in transition from traditional mode of operation to modern digitized and automated ICT enabled environment. The library has planned to use koha library management software for its automation the project. The Library is institutional member of Bombay natural history society and well connected with other institutional libraries throughout the country. The library also subscribe to many national and international periodicals to serve and support the information and Research need of the staff of the center. The Library of the Centre is being consulted by many research scholars, government officials from various departments, NGO's and academic students for their Research and project work.
