The Sunderban Regional Centre is the first regional Centre located inside the Sunderban Biosphere Reserve, which was established at Kakdwip, West Bengal under the Fifth Five Year Plan of the Government of India during June 1979. After this, the Centre was shifted to Canning, West Bengal in 1984 for better focus on Sunderban Biosphere Reserve. The primary objective of this Centre is to explore the faunal wealth of Sunderbans as it is closely entangled with waterways like rivers, creeks, estuaries and marine. The jurisdiction of the Centre includes two districts of West Bengal viz., North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas. It covers 01 Biosphere Reserve (Sunderban Biosphere Reserve), 01 National Park (Sunderban National Park), 01 Tiger Reserve (Sunderban Tiger Reserve), 05 Wildlife Sanctuaries (Haliday Island WLS, Lothian Island WLS, Sajnekhali WLS, Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary and Bibhutibhushan WLS). The Centre completed 39 major research programmes and discovered 06 new species from Sunderbans. Based on these programs, 156 research articles and 8 books have been published. The National Zoological Collection has a total holding of 50,948 specimens. The Museum of the Centre displayed nearly 619 specimens to educate and create awareness to the local public and students.

Identification and Advisory services are offered to students, researchers, and scientists of other institutions. The Centre takes part in National Conferences, Workshops and in exhibitions and as well takes part in the Tiger census.
