Etablished in August 1960 under the 2nd Five Year Plan of the Government of India, the Northern Regional Centre, ZSI, has the task to survey the areas under its jurisdiction comprising the entire state of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Union Territory Chandigarh and NCR Delhi. The region comprises of ecologically diverse areas ranging from the western Himalayas in north with Shivaliks at the base, through Gangetic Plains with Terai in north and Bundelkhand in south. The part of Aravalis in southwest with equally diverse biodiversity with 01 Biosphere Reserve (Nanda Devi), 02 Tiger Reserves (Corbett and Dudhwa), 09 National Parks, 46 Wildlife Sanctuaries, 02 Conservation Reserves and 48 Important Bird Areas. The Centre has a holding of 4,13,114 National Zoological Collections and completed over 268 research projects (including EIA) covering various aspects of faunal diversity in 5 States, 5 Ecosystems, 13 Conservation Reserves and 01 district Fauna. The Centre has published over 425 research publications in the form of books,   book chapters and articles in various national and international journals. Since the inception of this Centre, Scientists have described 76 species new to science. Other than the regular faunal survey programmes, various outreach activities of the Centre include the Green Skill Development Programme of MoEF&CC, Govt. of India. The Centre also organizes regularly the internships for post graduates, IFS Trainees, forest staffs and reach to the general public through several awareness programmes with regard to Biodiversity & Conservation and sustainable management of Natural Resources.
