Freshwater Biology Regional Centre

Hyderabad, Telangana

The Freshwater Biology Regional Centre was established under 5th Five -Year Plan of Govt. of India on 24th February 1979 at Hyderabad in contemplation to study the limnological aspects and faunal diversity of all the freshwater ecosystems including wetlands of National and International importance as well as Ramsar sites of India. The jurisdiction of the centre covers the fresh water bodies of the country. The repository of the Centre has 726 species and a total of 73947 named collections. The Centre is well equipped with facilities like modern analytical instruments for carrying out research in limno-ecology, faunistic studies and DNA Barcoding. The scientists of the Centre have described several new species. Till date, more than 824 DNA barcodes belonging to 305 species, 182 genera and 97 families of various faunal groups were generated and submitted to NCBI and BOLD gene bank. The Centre has developed ‘National Museum of Zoological Collections’ on 24th March 2021 with all representative faunal groups to educate students and research enthusiasts. The Centre is recognized by Osmania University and scientists are registered as Ph.D. Supervisors. Identification and advisory services of faunal groups particularly fishes, molluscs, aquatic insects and planktons are being consistently provided by the Centre to several research institutes. EIA studies, Skill Development Programme, Training and Workshops are also being conducted at the Centre from time to time

The centre primarily engaged in studies on fauna of fresh water bodies throughout India. In the year 2018, the centre extended its studies to protected areas (of Telangana) apart from freshwater bodies.

A total of 105816 specimens have been maintaining as National Zoological Collections in this office. The collection is composed of 73947 named specimens and 31869 unnamed specimens.
