The Estuarine Biology Regional Centre, Gopalpur-on-Sea, Ganjam, Odisha was established in 1980 during the 6th Five-year plan of Govt. of India. The Primary objective of this Centre is to conduct investigations on faunal diversity of estuaries, backwaters, lagoons and mangrove ecosystem along the east and west coast of India. Geographical coverage includes estuaries and mangrove ecosystem of India which are extended throughout the country along both east and west coasts and the jurisdiction of the Estuarine Biology Centre is “All India” covering all estuaries and associated mangrove ecosystem of the country. Total holdings of the Centre include 1,06,558 specimens. From this Centre over 38 research projects (including EIA) covering various aspects of faunal diversity of Estuaries, backwaters, mangroves and Chilika lagoon were completed. The scientists of this Centre have published over 250 research publications in the form of books, book chapters and articles in various national/ international journals. The scientists of EBRC have described a total of 19 species new to science and 29 species new records to Indian fauna. The Zoological Museum maintained by the Centre is one of its kinds in the entire Odisha displaying more than 500 species of animals and several awareness posters. The Centre is also equipped with a DNA laboratory for generating barcodes of animal species. The Centre is actively involved in long-term monitoring and tagging of Olive Ridley Sea turtles along the Odisha coast.

Chilika Lagoon, East coast of India, Mahanadi estuary, Devi Estuary, Nuanai Estuary, Bahuda Estuary, Rushuikulya Estuary, Bansadhara-Nagavali Estuary, Cauvery Estuary, Krishna Estuary, Similipal National Park, Tampara Lake, Haripur Creek, Brahmani-Baitarani Estuarine system, Lakhari Valley Wild life Sanctuary, Nalaban Wildlife Sanctuary, Subarnarekha Estuary, Narmada-Tapi Estuary, Godavari Estuary. 

All Indian estuaries, Mangrooves and backwaters.
