The Andaman and Nicobar Regional Centre was established at Port Blair on 21st April 1977 with the jurisdiction covering Andaman and Nicobar Islands and its coastal and off-shore waters. Over the period, ANRC have conducted 970 major field surveys and 600 extensive undersea surveys to monitor the health of Coral Reefs and associated fauna and have reported about 11,050 species of fauna. The scientists of the Centre have published 80 books and over 800 research papers in various peer reviewed national and international journals. Coral reefs and their associated faunal communities has been given special attention. The Centre presently holds 1,77,000 preserved (Dry and Wet) specimens of various faunal group, of which 3,500 specimens of 22 faunal group are displayed in its museum for researchers, students and general public. The scientists of this Centre have reported more than 20 species new to science from different faunal group. The Centre has trained more than 150 local unemployed youths through the certificate course on Para-Taxonomy, Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) under the Skill India Mission since 2017, SERB-DST Accelerate Vigyan. Over 100 outreach activities have been conducted in the Islands through seminars, workshops and webinars for the benefit of students, teachers and general public.

Faunal identification

A total of 11069 species of animals (Terrestrial and Marine) with 1123 species are endemic to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.   The Andaman and Nicobar Islands represents 10.72 faunal components of India.

More than 150 training and extensions were provided to students, research scholars, researcher, scientists of college, university, and research institutes, forest guards and forest range officers of Department of Environment and Forests, A&N Administration.

·          A National Symposium on 'Recent Advances in Biodiversity of Indian Subcontinent' was organized during 11 to 13 March, 2009.

·          A Workshop on 'Value of Biodiversity in Island Biosphere Reserve' was organized during 13 and 14 September 2013 for the school students.

·          A National Workshop on ‘Lesser Known Marine Animals of India (LEKMAI)’ was organized during 11 to 13 June 2015 for the scientists and research scholars.

·          A National Workshop on ‘Mainstreaming Coastal and Marine Biodiversity of India’ was organized during 23 to 25 March 2017 for the scientists and research scholars.

·          Participated in the Island Tourism and Cultural Festival during 18th to 22nd April 2018.  Displayed 15 LED boards on different faunal group of A & N Islands, 15 brochures depticting endemic & endangered fauna, publication of ZSI.  ZSI receive the best performance award.

·          International Day of Biological Diversity 2018: The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. 

·          World Environment Day 2018, the following activities have been conducted (Plastic Cleanness Drive in Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, in collaboration with Department of Environment & Forests; Painting competition to School/ College students, about 35 students from 10 different school have participated the competition; Exhibition of faunal diversity of A & N Islands through, LED displays, Pamphlets, and Brochures; Illumination of our office building with Green LED light; Distribution about 500 Free Seedlings to Local Public & Schools in collaboration with Department of Environment & Forests; One day seminar on the biodiversity of A & N Islands to School/College students will be conducted on 5th June 2018).

·          Organized a seminar and practical session of YOGA on 21st June 2018 to celebrate the 4th  International Day of Yoga (IDY) as a part of worldwide celebration.  

·          Swachh Bharat Summer Internship. Following the Prime Minister's clarion call on 2nd October 2014 for each individual to devote at least 100 hours to Swachhata through the year, the Ministry of Human Resource Development in association with the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has launched the 'Swachh Bharat Summer Internship – 100 Hours of Swachhata'. This programme has been launched with an objective to:  Develop the skill and orientation of youth for sanitation related work Bring youth across the country an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the swachhata revolution  Integrate youth in the community service in rural areas in the run up to the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.  Andaman and Nicobar Regional Centre, Zoological Survey of India (ANRC/ZSI) has been recognized as the nodal office with the Officer-In-Charge as the Nodal Officer. Details corresponding to the swachhata activities carried out at South Andaman, Middle Andaman and North Andaman during July 2018.

·          As requested by the Inspector General, Indian Coast Guard, a lecture delivered on Faunal Diversity of Andaman and Nicobar Islands with special reference to protected animals to the staff of Indian Coast Guard on 24th April 2018 at office of ICG, A & N Region.

·          one day Education awareness workshop on Environment and Forests has been organised on 11th September 2019 to the teachers and students of various school of South Andaman.

·          A workshop was organized on World Ozone Day for the celebration of 31st anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer on 16th September 2018 at this regional centre.

·          Training on Biodiversity of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to the in service IFS officers as a part of training programme, as requested by the Director, Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehra Dun, and 30 Divisional Forest Officers (IFS) (in service) across the country visited this office as part their refreshers course on 1st October 2018.

·          Training on Biodiversity of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to the IFS (Probationer) as a part of training programme, as requested by the Director, Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehra Dun, and 100 IFS trainees visited this office as part their refreshers course on 28th and 30th January 2019.

·          The Dept. of Environment & Forests, Andaman & Nicobar Administration is celebrating World Forestry Day-2019 in a befitting manner. The theme for this year celebrations is 'Forests & Education'. As part of the ongoing programmes in connection with World Forestry Day-2019, a one day workshop was organized at auditorium of Zoological Survey of India, Port Blair on 15.03.2019. The programme was organized by Dept. of Environment & Forests in association with Regional centres of Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and Botanical Survey of India (BSI) at Port Blair. The workshop was attended by faculties and students from Andaman College (ANCOL), Jawaharlal Nehru Rajakeeya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM), Andaman Law College, Dept. of Ocean studies & Marine Biology, Brookshabad campus, Pondichery University and Tagore Govt. College of Education (TGCE) Port Blair.  Resource persons from the Dept. of Environment & Forests, ZSI and BSI lead different sessions in the workshop.

·          Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) since 2017, Certificate courses such as Para-Taxonomy including People’s Biodiversity Register & Bird Identification and Basic Ornithology

·          Workshop on Bird identification & Basic Ornithology to college students/teachers, research scholars under the Accelerate Vigyan through SERB, Ministry of Science & Technology since 2018.

·          Training workshop on Coastal & Marine Biodiversity of Islands ecosystem to the Personals of Stakeholders & Personals of other services through MoEF&CC, GoI since 2020.

·          One month certificate course on Bird identification and basic Ornithology from 3rd January 2022 under the Green Skill Development Programme, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India (25 candidates are registered for this course) (Two batches)

·          Three-month certificate course on Para-taxonomy including preparation of people’s biodiversity register from 3rd January 2022 under the Green Skill Development Programme, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India (30 candidates are registered for this course) (Two batches)

·          As a part of World Environment Day Celebration 2022, ZSI, Port Blair organized various programmes such as Painting/Competition for the School / College students; Distributed about 200 seedling to local public & schools; Organized one day exhibition on faunal diversity of A & N Islands through, LED displays, pamphlets, and brochures; Illuminated our office building with Green LED light; One day seminar on Island Biodiversity of A & N Islands

·          As a part of the celebration of International Coastal Cleanup Day the Zoological Survey of India, Port Blair has organized coastal cleanup on 5th & 17th September 2022.

·          One-day workshop on 6th September 2022 in collaboration with the Vigyan Prasar (VP), Department of Science & Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India to highlight the idea of ‘Clean coast, Safe Sea’ for the benefit of the Teachers, Researchers and Students of these Islands. 

·          One day workshop organized as a part of the celebration of World Ozone Day on 16th September 2022.  The year 2022 is the 35th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

·          Organized five-day training on Bird Identification and Basic Ornithology to the frontline staff of the Department of Environment and Forests, A & N Islands, sponsored by Department of Environment and Forests during 7th – 11th November 2022.

·          Organised two week workshop on Bird Identification and Basic Ornithology under the under the Accelerate Vigyan Scheme (AV), sponsored by Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India during 15th – 29th  November 2022.

·          Organized five day training on Para-taxonomy including Preparation of People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) to the frontline staff of the Department of Environment and Forests, A & N Islands, sponsored by Department of Environment and Forests during 13th – 17th  December 2022 (45 trainees participated).
