Publications of ZSI

The publications of the Survey are widely circulated and have excellent reputation throughout the world. These publications are the main media for dissemination of the results of zoological researches conducted by the Survey as well as outside zoologists on Indian Zoology and a number of valuable papers have already appeared under the aegis of ZSI publications. The Department brings out regularly a number of Journals incorporating research results. The following are the publications of the Survey:

  1. Records of the Zoological Survey of India (Formerly Records of the Indian Museum) The Records of the Zoological Survey of India provides media for zoological communications dealing with taxonomy, faunistics, biology, eco­logy and population of any taxon and act as a journal of Indian Zoology. This is an annual pub­lication with four parts. It was started in the year 1907 and so far 107 volumes have been published.
  2. Occasional Papers: Records of the Zoological Sur­vey of India This is an extra-ordinary publication to include results of sizeable findings on particular topic or ani­mal group for quick publication under a separate cover. This publication got its start in the year 1976 and so far 270 numbers of such papers have been published.
  3. Memoirs of the Zoological Survey of India (Formerly Memoirs of the Indian Museum) This publication is meant to give highlights of the activities of the Survey during a particular financial year. It includes the researches conducted and papers published, areas surveyed both extensively and intensively, staff position, publications brought out and services rendered to research workers. So far reports up to the year 2000-01 have been brought out.
  4. Annual Report of Zoological Survey of India This publication is meant to give highlights of the activities of the Survey during a particular financial year. It includes the researches conducted and papers published, areas surveyed both extensively and intensively, staff position, publications brought out and services rendered to research workers. So far reports up to the year 1998-99 have been brought out.
  5. Bibliography of Indian Zoology For carrying out any scientific work it is very im­portant that lists of references on particular subject are available to researchers. Keeping this in view, the Zoological Survey of India started compiling the Bibliography of Indian Zoology. It is a yearly publication, comprising a list of works. Started in 1962, so far 33 volumes have been published. Handbooks Handbooks are published as manuals of identification of major groups of animals with keys and illustrations to make the subject more simplified.
  6. Special publications To bring out proceedings of symposia, seminars and workshops held by the Survey, and books of general and special nature, this publication was started recently. So far 33 publications have been brought out.
  7. Status Survey of Endangered Species Keeping in view the mandate of the Department to take up the status survey of endangered species, this series was planned and till now 11 species are covered.
  8. Fauna of India (Formerly Fauna of British India) The "Fauna of India" series is the continuation of the prestigious "Fauna of British India- and is meant to accommodate authentic monographic works on taxonomy and systematics of different groups of animals occurring in the country. They are assigned to the specialists working in the Survey and other Institutes. Under the new 'Fauna of India' series 43 volumes have been published so far."
  9. State Fauna Series This series accommodates the state wise faunistic survey results carried out by the HQs and Regional Stations. So far, series of 16 States have been covered.
  10. Conservation Area Series This series contains the findings of faunistic surveys conducted in a particular protected area carried out by HQs and Regional Stations. So far 34 documents have been published.
  11. Ecosystem Series This series accommodates the faunistic survey and other related studies conducted in a particular Ecosystem by the HQs and Regional Stations. So far 15 documents have been brought out.
  12. Prani Jagat (in Hindi) This Journal was started to include papers of general nature in Hindi. So far only 3 issues are brought out.
